Meet Miracle Lawyer

Whitworth Cadre Five
'11 Sociology Major

Life Christian Academy '07

Singing for God

The church is nearly packed with people. Miracle is a little nervous, even though she has been singing since she could talk. Her alto voice leads the verses of the song, "View the City," while the quartet choir backs her up on the chorus. Her father is playing bass, and her brother is on the keyboard. Playing drums is fellow Act Six scholar Marcus Nobles. Some of the congregation joins in on the chorus. The musicians are kicking off Holy Convocation, a week of daily services during the summer. To her, singing is a form of ministry, she said. "It's not about me when I get up there – it's about God – I have to put myself aside, and let God do what he needs to do through me."

Grateful

The extra meetings and assignments that Miracle had to accomplish during the Act Six training were hard for her to balance with her senior year coursework and job, she said. However, the training “saved a lot of headaches” down the road. “I truly believe the training prepared me very well for college,” she said. Specifically, she said that the Act Six training helped her to not procrastinate in college. Miracle said she appreciates the support she gets from Act Six while she’s on campus as well. "You're with a group of people that you can go to and talk to," she said. Miracle said being an Act Six scholar has helped her to be grateful. "This opportunity is a blessing for me," she said.

Great Education

Miracle said she loves that her school is small enough to allow her to contact individual teachers to ask for help. Miracle is unsure of her major, considering both communications and sociology. In her first year at college Miracle participated in a student discussion group that met weekly for four weeks to discuss stereotypes and other issues related to diversity. Miracle liked the leader’s peaceful manner and her concern for the issues that were being discussed.

Returning the Favor

Miracle said she plans to return to Tacoma after she graduates to help students who want to go to college but did not receive the college training that she received through Act Six. College students lead a group at her home church called Emerging Professionals that helps current high school students go to college by teaching them skills related to the SAT, time management, and networking. This group helped Miracle while she was in high school, and she plans to return during the summer to help train other high school students.

Advice

"College is not something you just get into, it’s something you have to work up to," Miracle said. Miracle advises all prospective college students to not wait until their junior or senior year before deciding to turn things around. "You have to have it in your head: 'I'm going to work hard,'" she said. It's important to talk to the school guidance counselor, asking them what is necessary to make it into college, she said. Students should use the resources they have, and parents, teachers and counselors are all important networking tools, she said.
